A wander in the woods

Golden opposite leaved Saxifrage. A salad herb. I found it quite bitter.

Hawthorn buds for a snack.

King Alfreds cakes

I wouldnt normally pick these because they are quite scarce here. However I found a secret store!

Buff up some old cleavers and grass.

A spark onto the King alfred cake and it glows quickly, amazingly easy really if they are dry. It is better if they are on dry wood as they are more likely to be dry. Then i put it in the nest.

a few blows and it went up.

Here is a handy thing.

Take a log, any size will do as long as you can split it. I used a samll one because I didnt have a saw with me.

split it

and again

carve it

And put it all back together and you will have a large cavity. Of course this is an easy way to make a cup when you use a bigger log. You have to get a tight join of course and you can use some resin or birch glue to seal it up nicely.

Interesting! Few things will take a spark that easily.

Hi Andy

I like the essence of this post - just going out to see what you can find along the way. Keep up the good work!

All the best

Paul
